  It was not until 626 that the third phase began, during the height of the Tang dynasty, when Chinese Buddhism had begun to flourish again. This was once again a period of intensive cutting of grottoes; it was the highpoint artistically of Longmen, especially during the reigns of Emperor Gaozang and Empress Wuzetian, who lived permanently at Luoyang. The group of giant statues in Fengxiansi Cave is most fully representative of this phase of Chinese art at Longmen; they are generally acknowledged to be artistic masterpieces of truly global significance.
  The final phase, from 755 to 1127, during the later Tang through to the Northern Song dynasty, saw a steep decline in the carving of grottoes at Longmen. This began with the capture of Luoyang in the mid-8th century during a rebellion, an event from which the area never recovered. It was the outbreak of warfare during the Jin and Yuan dynasties that brought grotto carving to an end.

  Elephant Trunk Hill is one of the Lijiang River's most famous sights. The hill is situated on the western bank of the Lijiang River, to the southeast of Guilin. It looks like an elephant, dipping its snout into the Lijiang River, hence the name "Elephant Trunk Hill". This sight is very representative of the landscape around Guilin and is a symbol of Guilin itself. A park and a Ming Dynasty pagoda are found on and around the Elephant Trunk Hill.

 
  A legend tells that an elephant, which belonged to the Emperor of Heaven, came down to earth to help the people in their work. This angered the Emperor of Heaven, who stabbed the elephant while it was drinking at the river's edge and turned it to stone. The cave between the body and the trunk of this elephant figure is of a particularly interesting shape and has inspired poets and other writers, old and new, to engrave verses on its walls. The poems of Lo You, Fan Chengda, and other poets from different dynasties are of inestimable literary and archaeological value. On the top of the hill stands the Puxian Pagoda, erected during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and shaped as the handle of the dagger with which the elephant was killed.
  Elephant Trunk Hill has the altitude of 200 meters, 108 meters long and 100 meters wide. The mountain area is up to 1.3 hectares, which is composed of pure limestone. The major scenic spots include: Xiangshan Square, HuiJiang Pavilion, Puxian Tower, Elephant-eye Grotto, Shuiyue hole, Shanxing Island and Yunfeng Temple.

Reed Flute Cave, known as "the Palace of Natural Arts", is located in Guilin City. The cave is one of the largest known examples of what each tropical karst cone conceals within it. It rates as one of the top attractions in the city.

  The cave oozes romance and history, not just because of the beguiling fairytales that are associated with each formation, but because of the 70 inscriptions that date back to the Tang Period (618-907). A visit to this 790-foot-deep hideaway is like a trip to another world. It will take you about an hour to walk through it, but the sense of serene escapism it engenders makes it feel like more than that. And the memories will last even longer.

  The Reed Flute Cave is about 240 meters long, tourists enter the cave and then take a U-shaped sight-seeing route to see different spots, whereupon they exit it from another cave quite near the entrance one. Walking through the serried stone pillars, tourists feast their eyes on changing spots, feeling they are in a paradise where the Gods live. Some of them were named after the vivid shapes of trees, hill, animals and etc. For some of these names, you need to use your imagination, but the story behind each is quite fun. It's a pleasure to listen to romantic or fairy tales whilst appreciating the fantastic stone formations. Both the stories and the lighting add mystery to the scene. Although there are different kinds of lighting inside, you are not supposed to take photos unless you are a professional photographer, because the light inside is not sufficient for exposure. At some spots, such as the Crystal Palace or Flower and Fruit Mountain, special photography is offered at 20 yuan for one picture.
